Jillanna Models for Art of Responsive Drawing Class

I'm currently teaching a drawing class for 6 weeks from a text book I picked up at the Civic Arts League White Elephant sale. Using The Art of Responsive Drawing as our stepping off place we are observing nature and how we responde to it shows in our work. I'm loving it and Rosemary is happy to find someone else who enjoys black and white. Jillanna, a bellydancer, modeled for us the first day. She did a great job.

Buford Historical Plein Air Festival Reception

These 6 x 6's were my favorite paintings done this week end in Buford. Many great painters inspired me to come home and paint better plein air paintings.

September Sunflowers

September 7, Carol, Durinda, and I painted amidst 100 acres of sunflowers. It took us an hour to drive so it was a high noon painting. Too hot. I had painted here twice before when the time of day was much better. I have little clue as to why I started such a large one except I wanted to try a technique where I painted red, yellow, and blue ovals of acrylics, let dry, and then paint over the primary colors rubbing out some of the top layer to reveal the colors of light. Looks like I need to experiment with a few more acres of canvas.

September 6th at the Reenactment of the battle of Tunnel Hill, GA about a dozen artists from Thomaston, Ackworth, Cobb County, Whitfield and Catoosa Counties painted en plein air. Great to meet new friends. Here I am attempting to paint people moving around which is not the easiest thing to do. But great practice.

Painting produce stand across the street from the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home where Jo Thomas, Lora Miller, and Sandra had a booth at the Art Festival benefiting the Home and sponsored by The Orchid Gallery-Beth Cox and by Civic Art League member-Barbara Ware. Any opportunity to paint is a good one. Jo took the small painting across the street and came back across 5 lanes of traffic carrying two bags of three cantalopes and a dozen juicy red tomatoes. Bartering is good!

Pastel Painting in Maggie Price Workshop

"Having fun" looks like this. Unfortunately the glare on the photo is distracting. Painting complimentaries as an underpainting is one of Price's techniques we employed. Rita Bickerstaff had invited me to go with her. Carolyn Molder, a Callaway gardens comrade, was Maggie's student also. Good to see her.

More Than A Taste Of Calhoun

Cathy Cooksey was generous to allow me to use this corner of her tent...the outside too. The last Saturday in April found Cathy, BJ, Tim, and me sitting all day in Calhoun. It was a perfect day weather wise.

Red Clay State Park

May 1, 2008 what a wonderful day to paint with a new value set of pastels endorsed by Maggie Price and made by Terry Ludwig.
Since I had been to Red Clay the museum has been painted a shade of green that I happened to have brought paper in the same shade. Normally I would not choose a paper of green to paint so many greens but I couldn't resist trying to capture this building since I had the basic color. I think I am 80% finished at this point. Hopefully I can finish it in the studio this time.

The Resting Tree

Although painted from a photo taken by Bradley I know this tree very well. I have painted it en plein air several times. It grows out in an open field in the historical Tunnel Hill in North West Georgia.

Sandra has three entries in the Reflections Gallery on Lee Highway Civic Arts League Winter 2008 Show. Stop by on Lee Highway to see this varied and exciting exhibition. A big thank-to to Tim West for framing that middle painting. It's the only one that is a pastel painted in the studio and the other two are plein air. Monet's bench needed a French style frame.

Toni Molleson, judge and Sandra with two works entered in show. The reflection coming off the Honorable Mention painting does not show it to it's best advantage. It is a plein air painting of a statue in The Church of the Nativity flower garden in Fort Oglethorpe, GA. The painting below is a pastel of an old home place on Three Notch Road.

Pastel Workshop Demo

At the pastel class's request to "finish" a demo this is the result. I would appreciate any critique. When doing a demo there is pressure to quickly bring it to completion so the students have time to utilize what they learn. This is done on Canson paper which I rarely work on but I think I liked the softness of the background. Any comments?

This alla prima painting was done at the Buford Paint Out last year and was purchased at the reception at the close of the paint out. Buford is a small quaint historical town bypassed by the Mall of Georgia. A show was held there in January for the participating artists of their first Plein Air Paint Out. Look for it again this year.

This painting was done in January and someone walked by and said those are funny colors for fall. I questioned "fall"....I wouldn't consider January to have Fall colors. These are winter colors on a warm sunny day.

Aunt Bessie's Apron

This apron belonged to my favorite aunt on my father's side. I hung it on the line and painted it with the light shining through. Since the butterflies weren't stationery I painted them in the studio from dead live specimens. This is a special subject for me as the apron is from family, the butterflies are from my "bug" collection, and I am doing a series with found sticks. Look for more coming to a "blog" near you!

Lone Cow

This milk cow was painted early one summer morning to preserve the memories of the community dairy. The farmer had since gone out of the dairy business.
